Siting a Propane Tank

LP (propane) gas is the alternative available for gas appliances when Natural Gas isn't available. (All of our gas fireplace products are available in LP gas versions.) Propane tanks have a number of rules about placement. Tanks of different sizes have different requirements, but locally most LP gas companies offer a 120 gallon vertical tank which actually holds 100 gallons of fuel when filled to 80%, the allowed maximum.

A propane tank less than 125 gallons can be placed adjacent to the house, while larger tanks must be at least 10' away. This means the tank can be more easily disguised by planting a bush or tree in front of it, making the tank placement more visually inconspicuous. A 125 gallon tank is 4' tall and 3' diameter.

There are restrictions about clearances. The propane tank must be at least 5' from a door or window and 10' from ignition sources such as heat pumps, window air conditioners, direct vent pipe terminations, etc.

A 125 gallon LP gas tank (420 lb.) is sufficient for most homes using a gas hearth appliance. Normally the LP gas company will set you up on an automatic monthly fill schedule to keep your tank full. If your needs are greater then up to four 125 gallon tanks can be placed adjacent to each other to meet the demand for more fuel.

When shopping for a propane gas supplier you'll want to clarify the way all charges are assessed. Most allow you to rent the tank rather than purchasing it outright.

Make sure you understand the way all fees affect your overall costs including
  • Fees for initial tank delivery & setup
  • Does the placement include installation of a sturdy base?
  • Monthly or annual tank rental charges
  • Are tank rental charges waived for using a set minimum of gas per year?
  • Cost per gallon of fuel
  • Is there a fuel discount for using a minimum amount of gas per year?
